Edwin moses6/11/2023 Some things, it seems, are more important than winning streaks. "I finished dead last," he says with a wink in his voice. At the end of the session, Moses raced his young charges. He was previously married to Myrella Bordt. He is a director and actor, known for Australian Geography (1971), Our Land Australia (1972) and Where Dead Men Lie (1971). But he remembers the last time he did: In 2006, he held a hurdles clinic for kids in New York. Edwin Moses was born on Augin Dayton, Ohio, USA. Now 55, Moses no longer runs due to back problems. "At the 1976 Olympics, I saw how drugs were changing our sport," he says. Moses also began speaking out against performance-enhancing drugs. He set a world record for the 400m hurdles in 1976 and holds the world record for a decade-long. "There was open sewage, garbage everywhere, and people lived in tiny shacks." He watched children playing soccer with inflated condoms wrapped in plastic bags. Hurdler Edwin Moses is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, competing in the 19 games. "The poverty I saw gave me a purpose in life," he says. On one of his first trips abroad for Laureus, Moses visited Mathare Valley, a slum in Kenya. He even tried bobsledding, placing third in the two-man competition at the 1990 World Cup. As a CEO for a total of almost 20 years, he built two businesses (Oxford Asymmetry International plc and Ablynx nv), led their successful IPOs on the LSE. He went on to collect another Olympic gold and three more world records. At the Montreal Olympics, he executed his plan, winning a gold medal and the world record. He calculated that he could cover the 40 meters between each hurdle in 13 steps (instead of the customary 14) if he took strides of exactly nine feet, nine inches. "I studied what the Cuban and the Russian athletes were doing," Moses says today, "then I put together a program I thought I could survive." For three years, Moses adhered to a brutal schedule of endurance, speed, and hurdling training. Moses, a physics and engineering major at Atlanta's Morehouse College, looked at the event as a problem to be solved. From August 1977 until May 1987, he ran in 122 400-meter-hurdle races. For nine years, nine months, and nine days, Edwin Moses was as close to perfect as anyone in modern athletics had ever seen.
